High Standard?

Have you ever been reprimanded so sweetly that you didn't know it happened?..and yet, you were still convicted and came out for the better? It is an art form to be able to do this, but as a Lady, it is a good thing to strive for. I was watching Pride and Prejudice the other day, and a conversation stood out to me..Elizabeth: "Let her triumph over us from a distance and be satisfied!" Jane: "Lizzie that is unkind."
This is a perfect example of what I am talking about...we do not have to be rude or overbearing or proud, but there is a time and place where we should call people to a higher standard. If we do not call people up and out of their mistakes, or even just, but unkind feelings...We live in a world where people very often are told that they can and should have whatever they want, and can say and so whatever they want...part of being a lady is to shed some of the light of kindness, goodness, and reality on them. This is a high standard in today's terms, but in reality it should be minimum instead of maximum.

The Defining Factor

The definition of a Lady is "One who makes those around her comfortable." It has nothing to do with wealth or looks, but it is how you treat other people. This definition encompass most of what I have already been saying about being on time, treating others well, being modest, choosing words that will not offend people. In fact, what we say is just as important as what we do. You do not need to have a large vocabulary (though one is nice) in order to have intelligent or meaningful conversations. I was doing research on Irving Berlin (the man who wrote the song White Christmas as well as God Bless America) and his philosophy was that people liked simple songs that said what they meant, and what they new.
So, instead of trying to remember all of the thousands of rules about doing this or that and always saying the rite thing, just try and remember to make people comfortable....not necessarily meaning fluffing their pillows before they sit down on the couch, but perhaps refilling a glass of water for them. In that mindset, simplicity often is the best way to go.
